Kids Headshots for Casting Directors

Casting directors use headshots as a quick visual tool to decide who to audition, often reviewing hundreds of submissions. A headshot is usually the first thing they look at - very quickly and as a small thumbnail! A headshot needs to help them answer one simple question instantly. “Does this child look like the character described in the brief?” If they see a match they are more likely to open a profile, watch a showreel and invite to an audition. So that main headshot needs to be nice and close and tell them everything they need to know about your child's face in an instant - while jumping off the screen and grabbing their attention.

It also helps to be memorable - casting directors see many performers across different projects so a clear, impactful and accurate headshot helps them recognise someone they liked before and call them in again.

The key is authenticity and clarity. A main headshot should:

  • Look exactly like you right now (current hair, age, and style).
  • Be natural and simple, not overly stylised.

So a good main headshot needs to be authentic, impactful, clear and aligned with the roles your child can realistically play.

Kids Headshots for Spotlight

Using Spotlight effectively can significantly increase your chances of being seen and invited to auditions. Make sure your child's profile is complete and up to date. This includes accurate details such as age range, height, playing age, accents, and skills. Casting directors often filter searches using these criteria, so missing or incorrect information can mean you don’t even appear in relevant searches. High-quality and accurate headshots are a must. Your main headshot should clearly show how your child looks now. Additional headshots can then lean into different casting types.

Alongside your headshot think about monologues and a strong showreel. Casting directors frequently watch reels directly on Spotlight when deciding who to audition. So keep it short, clear, and focused on the best professional footage.

And keep credits and training updated. Even small credits and workshops help demonstrate experience and development.

What Makes a Great Headshot?

A headshot is often the first thing casting directors see. Whether it’s on Spotlight, with your agent or in a casting submission, it plays a major role in whether your child will get called in to audition. Casting directors look at hundreds of faces when casting a role. A good headshot helps them quickly decide whether your child fits the brief and whether they want to learn more about them. That’s why it needs to be clear, natural, impactful and genuinely representative of how they look right now.

Faces are incredibly powerful. Humans are wired to recognise and read them instantly, picking up subtle expressions and character cues in a split second. Your child's face is their unique selling point as a performer —there’s no one else who looks exactly like them. A good headshot should celebrate that individuality rather than hide it.

Always remember that authenticity is key. One of the biggest frustrations for casting directors is when a child arrives looking little or nothing like their headshot (believe me, I've been there!). Over editing, heavy filters, or outdated photos can damage trust and create the wrong impression.

A headshot is essentially a front line marketing tool. It represents your child when they're not in the room and helps casting directors and agents imagine them in a role. A strong headshot doesn’t need to be overly stylised - it just needs to be honest and professional. Find out more here.

How Many Headshots Do You Need?

Usually four or five strong headshots that show different aspects of casting range. A primary headshot should look natural and represent how your child appears day-to-day, as this is typically the lead image used on casting platforms like Spotlight. Additional shots might highlight different casting types – for example, a brighter commercial look, a more serious dramatic image, or a slightly different style. The goal isn’t variety for its own sake but clarity. Each headshot should feel authentic and believable, helping casting directors quickly imagine your child in a role while still recognising them instantly in auditions.

A typical setup is:

  • 1 main headshot – the primary image that represents how your child looks day-to-day. This is the photo casting directors see first and it really needs impact.
  • 1–2 additional natural looks – slightly different expressions and aspects of your childs character that still feel authentic and natural.
  • 1–2 casting-type shots – images that hint at different roles they might play - this is all about a feeling or mood rather than a full character portrait.

The key is quality over quantity. Casting directors scroll quickly, so a few clear, authentic and impactful images are more effective than lots of headshots that all look the same.

How Parents Can Prepare For Their Kid's Headshot Session

Preparation is everything and it means that on the day we shoot you can get the best from our time together. So it’s always best to arrive a little early with children well rested and with plenty of drinks and snacks in hand if they need a little break or an energy boost during the shoot. If you want to share ideas or outfit choices with me before the shoot to help you get ready that's no problem at all - we can chat on email, on a call or over Zoom. As every parent knows, things don't always go quite to plan, so if life throws a curveball your way last minute, we can always reschedule your session.

Bring as many outfits as you like. I love options. I have a portable steamer at the studio so we can always tidy things up a little when you unpack if needed. My advice is bring the clothes that your kids love to wear and they feel really comfortable in. Patterns, textures, coats and jackets – nothing is off the table. So let’s get them all up on the rail in the changing area and chat through the best options.
