Headshots Without The Headaches

You know that you want your headshots or portraits to be professional, natural and impactful. But the truth is most of us don't enjoy being photographed and can find it challenging. Even for experienced actors, singers and dancers who love being in front of the camera, the process of freezing a frame can seem at odds with performing. And for most creative people behind the scenes or for clients in the business world, stepping into a studio is unusual and outside of their comfort zone. Which is why I make every effort to ensure that the whole process from initial contact to final edits is as straightforward and stress free as possible for you. Take a look through the FAQ below to see how.

"Thank you so much Roj! Genuinely enjoyable from start to finish (which is INCREDIBLE because getting headshots terrifies me). Can't express how grateful I am that I have so many strong choices to decide between!"

FAQ

ARE YOU EXPENSIVE?

Let's be honest, you can always find someone that's cheaper (or more expensive for that matter). My focus has always been on value. I know your headshots are an important investment in your career and that you can't afford to pay for a shoot that won't deliver results. So every shoot with me includes an additional 30 minutes to arrive, relax, chat through the session and prepare. I'm not a clock watcher, if we run a little over time, that's no problem. And while we're shooting I'll be completely focused on you and the shots you need. My number one priority is that you leave knowing you have exactly what you wanted and without feeling you've wasted a single penny.

HOW EASY IS IT TO BOOK A HEADSHOT SESSION?

Booking is just one click away through the website. You can see all of my available dates and sessions and select a time that works best for you. There's a £50 deposit payable through the booking system, Photo Workflow, and once your session is secured I'll email you with all the details you need to make your balancing payment. You can cancel or reschedule up to 48 hours before your session without losing your deposit, and after that you can always reschedule if you need to. If you'd like to discuss something with me before booking I'm always available on email and happy to help. And if you have specific requirements for the shoot, a moodboard, sample images or outfit choices you want to share with me ahead of the day that's no problem at all. If it helps you prepare we can always chat on a call. Whatever you need from me before your session, just let me know.

WHAT'S THE STUDIO LIKE?

The studio is perfectly located just a 10 minute walk from Tottenham Hale Station. This provides quick and easy access on the London Underground Victoria Line and the overground from London Liverpool Street, Stratford and Stansted Airport. The full address is right here on the website and I'll also email you directions once you've booked in. On arrival I'll come down to greet you. You can even grab a coffee from the fully licensed café on the ground floor, Iron and Ivy.

The studio is at the top of The Archives on the 5th floor with a great view across to Alexandra Palace, which is why it's called The Nest. The natural light is absolutely fantastic, but of course The Nest is also fully equipped with all the lighting and backdrops needed to bring your shoot to life, whatever the weather. There's a dedicated changing area for you to hang your clothes, prepare yourself and switch outfits during the shoot with an iron, steamer, bobby pins, hair bands, wipes for glasses and anything else you might need on the day.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR MY HEADSHOT SESSION?

Preparation is everything and it means that on the day we shoot you can get the best from our time together. So it’s always best to arrive a little early, well rested, hydrated and ready to look and give your best. If you want to share ideas or outfit choices with me before the shoot to help you get ready that's no problem at all - we can chat on email, on a call or over Zoom.

Sometimes, things don't go quite to plan so honestly, if you cut yourself shaving or you're having a poorly timed break-out, don't stress. These things are very easy to address at the editing stage. And if life makes other plans for you last minute, we can always reschedule your session.

Bring as many outfits as you like. I love options. But it’s time to whip out the iron because we really don't want lots of creases. Honestly, this really can make a huge difference to your headshots and how you present yourself to the world. I have a portable steamer at the studio so we can always tidy things up a little when you unpack if needed. My advice is bring the clothes that you love to wear – pieces that tell the world who you are and that you feel really comfortable in. Patterns, textures, coats and jackets – nothing is off the table. So let’s get them all up on the rail in the changing area and chat through your best options. In general it’s better to keep make-up for headshot sessions light and natural – it’s all about accentuating rather than disguising your natural look - but we can go a little heavier for certain looks or styles.

And if you want to shave your moustache, beard, stubble or head mid-shoot that's absolutely no problem at all - although you might want to book a Complete or Unlimited Session to allow some additional time.

There's lots of really helpful information right here for you too.

WHAT ARE YOUR SESSIONS LIKE?

Headshots and portraits are crucial to your portfolio, marketing and chances of success. They need to be more than just a great likeness. They need to represent you, your personality and the roles or opportunities you’re looking for. Which is why every shoot with me begins 30 minutes of free time for you to arrive, relax and settle into the studio. We'll chat through your requirements, review your outfits and develop a plan for the session to ensure everything is tailored to your needs.

Your headshots need to stand out with a character and quality that makes a great first impression and demands a second look. As well as being natural and authentic they need to be compelling images that pop off the screen or page, even as a thumbnail. So throughout your session I will work with you creatively, directing you to get the best from your sitting and to allow your individuality and character to shine through. A shoot with me is a little bit like a workshop or a creative collaboration (with some great Spotify playlists) - I'll be guiding you every step of the way, helping with posing and keeping an eye on the details. There's no rush, we'll take our time and shoot plenty of options so you have plenty of choices when you review your contact sheet. I keep sessions relaxed and informal so if we run over time a little, it’s no problem. I want you to leave the studio feeling confident that you have everything you need. That's always my number one priority. We'll work our way toward the best images, review the shots as we go and you have a say in what's happening every step of the way.

And if you have strong ideas about how you’d like your shots to look, that’s no problem. I’ll work with you to bring those ideas to life. My approach isn’t about always working to a house style. Or pumping out the same old look-a-like headshot over and over on a production line. Because everyone is different and that's something to celebrate. I offer a boutique service focused on you in a professional studio environment.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SESSION?

After your session I’ll send you a digital contact sheet through Photo Workflow within 5 working days so you can make your final choices before I work on your edits. I carefully look through your shoot and remove any images with eyes closed etc so that you only have to spend time looking through headshots and portraits that work. I also go through and select a set of favourites for you so you can see which images I think work best. You can favourite images on your contact sheet, comment on them, share the contact sheet to get a second opinion - I can even add your agent if you'd like me to. Once you've made your final selection simply add them to the shopping basket (your edits included with the session will show up as £0) add any editing notes you have for me and put the order through.

I carefully edit all of the images myself to ensure they are clean, natural, authentic and deliver what we wanted to achieve on the day. Temporary imperfections are all removed – so if there’s anything about your appearance that won’t be there in two weeks time, it won’t be in your final edit either. For me the editing is a significant part of the process because this is where we develop and enhance the story that each headshot or portrait is looking to tell. Please allow up to 7 working days for your edits. But if you need an express service, just let me know.

Your contact sheet will be available to you for two years after the shoot so there's no pressure at all to make your selection quickly. And if something crops up in a few months that we captured the perfect shot for, it'll be there waiting for you and ready to order.

IS THERE A COMMUNITY AROUND THE NEST?

It's important to me that every aspect of my photography business is focussed on and celebrates the people I work with. It's amazing how many of us are connected through the people that we know and the projects we've worked on. There's so much opportunity to work together and help each other out. That's why I offer discounted training and mentoring for actors and writers, industry advice and insights from trusted contacts and days dedicated to helping talent access the marketing tools needed to get noticed. It's all here in the Community section of this website.
